Leo Tolstoy, War & Peace. London: The Folio Society, 1971.
Translated and with an introduction by Rosemary Edmonds. With over 600 drawings by Polish expressionist painter and post-war artist Feliks Topolski, printed from line-blocks and mostly arranged into groups to form full-pages.
251 × 168 × 47–48 mm. 2 vols (pp. [1–4] 5–707 [708]; [1–4] 5–728). Type: Poliphilus and Blado with Albertus for display. Limited, Unnumbered Edition published at the same time as the Standard, this being printed and bound by Mackay in full royal blue naturally-grained hide with gilt-tops, with brown pastepaper endleaves, and in a dark-blue cloth-covered slipcase.
"A complete picture of human life; a complete picture of the Russia of that day; a complete picture of everything in which people place their happiness and greatness, their grief and humiliation."
One of the most beautiful productions of 'War and Peace' of recent decades in a binding of an understated elegance echoing the 19th century when the novel was written. The Society's later re-issue of War and Peace in 2006 as a single volume, while benefitting from a more modern look overall, does not have the same thick, creamy paper, and soft leather, and is not as pleasant to read from due to its garguantan size. The edition listed herewith greatly benefits from being split into two volumes.
Condition-wise, these are very good copies with some small, innocuous spots of wear to an ever-so-slightly dry and tacky leather binding; else immaculate, with pages clean, bright and very tightly bound, beautifully rounded spines and pristine gilt tops that fail to show even the thinnest hairline scratch. They are housed in a slipcase with some rubbing and shelf-wear to panels, and a shallow bump to rear; else clean and structurally sound.
A beautiful and fitting two-volume edition in a fine, limited-run binding of one of the greatest novels ever written - a sweeping epic that interweaves the lives of aristocratic families with the historical events of Napoleon’s invasion of Russia.
