Uncle Silas, A Tale of Bartram-Haugh by J. Sheridan le Fanu. London: The Folio Society, 1988. Second printing thus. Illustrated by Charles Stewart. Introduction by Devendra P. Varma. 229 × 160 × 34 mm. Pp. [i–iv] v–xxi [xxii], 1–392 [393–394]: [28] leaves of ‘plates’. Type: Imprint with Engravers’ Titling for display and hand-drawn lettering (by Stewart) for the title. Printed by Memminger MedienCentrum. Bound by Real Lachenmaier in full dark green cloth with a design in gold by Stewart; pale yellow endleaves. Dark green slip case.

Stewart’s line-drawings are particularly effective and, in addition to the 29 full-page designs, he has supplied 34 vignette head- and tail-pieces (five of them used four or five times each). The binding is also successful as a pastiche of a nineteenth-century decorated publisher’s binding. The cloth had to be specially calendared to make it smooth enough to take the fine detail of Stewart’s design.

New and sealed, with the lightest bump to rear corner of slipcase; else a fine-looking copy.

Le Fanu's Victorian Gothic "locked-room" mystery follows young Maud Ruthyn, who, after her father's death, is sent to live with her enigmatic Uncle Silas—once accused of murder and now her guardian. M. R. James described Le Fanu as ‘one of the best storytellers of the last age’.

In a 2015 article on the Society's website, the Society explains how Charles Stewart was chosen as the illustrator for this edition, or rather how this edition was chosen because Charles Stewart illustrated it. In spring 1984, The Folio Society held its first major illustration exhibition at the Royal Festival Hall. Known for its post-war mission to revive the arts of typography, binding, and illustration in commercial publishing, the Society already held an impressive archive of original works by artists such as Edward Bawden, Mervyn Peake, Joan Hassall, and Quentin Blake. The exhibition also welcomed submissions from new artists—and this is when Charles Stewart appeared, impeccably dressed and carrying a plastic bag filled with some 30 masterfully atmospheric illustrations for Uncle Silas. Though unfamiliar with the novel at the time, Folio was so struck by Stewart’s work that they immediately resolved to publish the book—convinced that if the story was even half as compelling as the images, it would be a perfect fit for their list.
