Tractatus de Herbis (Treatise on Herbs), Egerton MS 747. London: The Folio Society, 2003. Special, limited, numbered facsimile edition.

2 vols (see below). Printed by the Bath Press. Dark green two-volume clamshell box, spine-label (titled as above). This work consists of a facsimile of a late thirteenth-century herbal now in the British Library, and a separate volume of commentary by Minta Collins, housed in a recess in the box which contains the facsimile. Although dated 2002, copies were not ready for distribution until early 2003. The two volumes are as follows:

[1] Tractatus de Herbis [facsimile]. 368 × 250 × 35 mm. Ff. [I–II] III–CIX [CX]. Type: Octavian for the colophon. Photographed digitally by Laurence Pordes. Bound by Smith Settle in full dark green morocco with raised bands and bevelled boards titled (as above) in gold and decorated in black and blind, with red onlays, to a design by David Eccles, gilt edges; pale green and dark green hand-made endleaves. The colophon records that 1000 numbered copies were printed (there were a further 100 copies for private distribution). A slip bearing notes on the care of leather is loosely inserted.

[2] Tractatus de Herbis, British Library Egerton MS 747, commentary Minta Collins, list of plants Sandra Raphael. 221 × 156 × 11 mm. Pp. [1–6] 7–76 [77–80]. Type: Ehrhardt. Bound by the Bath Press in quarter dark green buckram, pale green hand-made paper boards, cover-label; dark green endleaves.

A gorgeous facsimile edition of the exceptionally artistic, illuminated scientific manuscript comprising a vast store of European medical knowledge of the high Middle Ages. The facsimile itself is in near-fine condition, with just the lightest hairline scratches to the gilded edges. The commentary volume is fine. The clamshell is very good, with only a few shallow scratches and ever-so-light discolouration to upper extremity of front panel. This edition is accompanied by the original owner's receipt.
