A delightful pair of first editions of two of the funniest books in the English language, two classic comic travelogues featuring three hapless friends and their misadventures, as follows:
Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog), by Jerome K. Jerome. Bristol: J. W. Arrowsmith, 1889. First edition, first issue, as distinguished by the imprint reading "Quay Street" with no street number on the title page, and 37 titles listed in the Bristol Library advert at rear. With in-text line drawings by Arthur Frederics. Publisher's original greenish-blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front board decorated in black, printed endpapers, top edge blue.
Blind stamp of W. H. Smith & Sons to rear free endpaper; small penned initials to front free endpaper. Spine ends bumped and a little frayed, mild bumping to corners, slight cockling and fading to cloth on the spine, a few small stains to covers. Book block a little shaken, inner hinges cracked, but moderately firm, and a few cracks throughout, but no loose pages. Fading to top edge, some foxing throughout (mostly contained to extremities), a few small stains throughout (as pictured), without affecting legibility, and a few creases to pages. A good true first-edition copy of this tale of three friends (and a mischievous dog) who set out on a boating trip along the River Thames.
Three Men on a Bummel, by Jerome K. Jerome. Bristol: J. W. Arrowsmith, 1891. First edition. Illustrated by L. Raven Hill. Publisher's original crimson cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front board decorated and lettered in red, plain endpapers, top edge coloured.
Small penned inscription to front free endpaper with further pencil ones to front paste-down and verso of front endpaper. Spine ends bumped and a little frayed, light cocking to spine, mild wear to corners. Binding firm with only a few shallow cracks throughout. Fading to top edge, very little foxing throughout (all contained to extremities) and three pages roughly cut by a previous owner (with extremities nibbled, not affecting text). A very good true first-edition copy of this humorous sequel to Three Men in a Boat, following the same trio of friends as they embark on a chaotic cycling tour through Germany.
A lovely pair.
