The Witches by Roald Dahl. London: Jonathan Cape, [1983]. First UK edition, first printing. Pp. 206. Original publisher's binding, gilt lettering to spine, plain endpapers; with unclipped dust wrapper showing price £6.50 to front flap. Light bumping and a little wear to corners and spine tips, spine cocked, tanning to edges and to pages throughout with a few faint pencil marks to edges and a couple of smudges to a couple of pages (as pictured), and a small handful of ear marks throughout that have now been straightened (and only left behind shallow creases). In a dust wrapper with light sunning to spine, with creasing and a little wear and peeling to extremities; now placed in a removable, protective sleeve of archival quality.

Partly set in Norway and partly in England, The Witches tells the story of a young English boy and his Norwegian grandmother in a world where child-hating societies of witches secretly exist in every country. The witches are ruled by the vicious and powerful Grand High Witch, who arrives in England to organise her plan to turn all of the children there into mice. A dark fantasy, The Witches won three awards in the year it was published, including The New York Times Outstanding Books Award, The Federation of Children’s Book Groups Award and The Whitbread Award, and went on to be adapted on screen in 19190 and, more recently, in 2020.
