The Tale of Timmy Tiptoes, by Beatrix Potter. London: Frederick Warne and Co. and New York, 1911. First edition, first or second printing (the first two printings are indistinguishable), with date 1911 to title page; 16mo (160 x 110mm); colour frontispiece, plain title vignette and 26 colour plates, pictorial endpapers, publisher's brown boards with mounted colour illustration to front. (Linder, p.429)
Good minus condition. Small, half-centimetre portion missing to head of of spine, split between spine and rear cover with the spine now loose on one side (still fully attached to the front cover), light bumping to corners, and a couple of small marks. A few spots of foxing to prelims, small stain to front paste-down, further large-but-faded stain to half-title, sporadic thumb marks to pages, and cracks with netting slightly exposed in a couple of places throughout, but overall pages are clean and holding together well. Collated as complete.
As Beatrix Potter's books continued to sell, she became known in America as well as Britain, receiving letters from eager readers far and wide. 'The Tale of Timmy Tiptoes' was written to appeal to an American audience, with grey squirrels (which originally came to Britain from America), chipmunks and a black bear. Even the book's dedication shows the author departing from her usual very personal message to look further afield: "For many unknown little friends, including Monica." Monica was "the school friend of a little cousin, who asked for it as a favour, and the name took my fancy", as Beatrix explained later. By this time (1911), Potter was very occupied with farming and looking after her elderly parents, and Timmy Tiptoes' story was the only book to appear in that year. 'The Tale of Timmy Tiptoes' follows a squirrel who is believed to be a nut-thief by his friend, who then imprisons him in a hollow tree with the hope that he will confess.
