This is the RARE Export Edition, considered the TRUE FIRST. In an unclipped dust wrapper that lacks the price on its front flap. Printed by William Clowes and Sons.This is the variant bound in blue cloth (no priority determined), with dark blue/white headbands and dark-blue stained top edge. Comes in the blue coloured dust wrapper. Includes the misprints on pp. 330, l. 4 ('Fëanor' for 'Fëanor.') and 352, l. 39 ('Lord of Waters and King of the Sea' in Italic) which have been corrected in later impressions. (Hammond, J. R. R. This variant is among the rarer ones of the first printings of this book and is generally considered to be the FIRST STATE.
DETAILED CONDITION REPORT
A little discolouration towards extremities of the binding, foot of spine ever-so-lightly turned inwards, bump to upper right-hand side corner of the front cover. Top edge a tad faded, foxing to fore and lower edges, and a handful of foxing spots to FFEP. Birthday dedication dated 1977 penned to FFEP. Map at rear in complete, clean condition, with a slight inch-long tear towards the joint (see last photo). Else a very good copy with clean covers and spine, with clear and bright stamping on spine of title, author, publisher and heraldic device of Lúthien Tinúviel, and with binding nice and square.
The unclipped dust wrapper has a crease to rear flap with a little creasing and peeling to extremities, including a very small, half-inch sized portion peeled to front cover, a little shallow scratching, and light fading to spine; now placed in an archival wrapper.
