GIFFORD, William (Translated into English verse by). The Satires of Decimus Junius Juvenalis. London: Printed by W. Bulmer and Co. for G. and W. Nicol, Booksellers to His Majesty, 1802. 4to, 281 x 220 mm.
First edition of this long-gestated translation of Juvenal by one of fiercest satirists of his day, William Gifford. 4to, pp. [iv], lxvii, [i], 486 + engraved frontispiece. Errata slip bound in at the beginning.
Contemporary full diced calf, twin-rule in gilt to covers, gilt lettering and repeated decorative motif to spine, top edge coloured, fore edge and lower edge speckled, additional gilt motifs to turnins, hand-marbled endpapers. Externally worn and marked in places, professionally rebacked, binding square and overall firm but with front and rear hinges partially torn (with the last three leaves partially loose), occasional heavier spotting and offsetting throughout (primarily from the plates) but none affecting legibility.
With the bookplate of George Moffatt to front paste-down, owner of Goodrich Court Castle originally built by the antiquarian Sir Samuel Rush Meyrick in 1828. This is placed on top of another bookplate with name of R. H. Sparks.
William Gifford (1756-1826) came from poor beginnings and achieved patronage on the strength of his writing, which allowed him to study at Exeter College, Oxford; there he began work on this translation and proposed a subscription publication as early as 1781, but was sidetracked by other work, including original satires on contemporary writers of the Della Cruscan school (so effective that they are now primarily remembered as satirical targets), and editorship of the Antijacobin. The translation finally saw print more than two decades after he began work on it, and his autobiographical Introduction to explain the delay fills some twenty pages with a 'moving document of hardship and self-improvement (admired even by Gifford's bitter enemies Leigh Hunt and William Hazlitt)' (ODNB). Lord Byron named Gifford the best of the age's satirists.
