Samuel Taylor Coleridge, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. London: The Folio Society, 1994. First printing thus. Wood engravings by Garrick Palmer, introduction by Richard Holmes. 260 × 215 × 12 mm. Pp. [1–6] 7–50: [7] leaves of ‘plates’ (facing pp. 22–23, 24–25, 31, 32, 36, 42 and 47). Type: Spectrum. Printed on pale blue paper by the Bath Press. Bound by the Bath Press in full dark purple-red artificial moiré silk, cover-label with a wood-engraving in dark purple-red by Palmer; pale blue endleaves. Dark red slip case.

Folio had done well to avoid publishing a separate edition of this text for so long but, in 1993, it bowed to the inevitable and produced the present edition, with Palmer’s ten full-page wood-engraved ‘plates’ (two are printed both recto and verso, and the frontispiece is included in the pagination). The second printing of this edition is printed, unlike this one, on white paper.

Ever-so-slight sunning to spine; else a near-fine copy. In a very good slipcase that is a little stained to one panel.

A beautiful edition with wood engravings by Palmer of Coleridge’s narrative poem about a sailor who brings a curse upon his ship by killing an albatross. As supernatural forces take hold, he endures a nightmarish journey of isolation, suffering, and eventual redemption.
