The complete 'Rainbow' Shakespeare set of 37 volumes published by The Folio Society between 1950 and 1976. Octavo (222 × 172mm), publisher's cloth binding stamped with alternating black and gold quills on the covers and titles to spine. All volumes printed in two colours, with speaker names, act headers and marginal scene titles in a colour that matches the binding. The cloth bindings are colour-coded, with Histories bound in various shades of blue, Comedies in green-ish hues, and Tragedies in shades of brown.
Titles included:
- Tragedies: The Tragedy of King Lear, Troilus and Cressida, Titus Andronicus, Timon of Athens, Julius Caesar, Antony and Cleopatra, Coriolanus, The Tragedy of Othello, The Tragedy of Hamlet, The Tragedy of Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet.
-
Comedies: The Winter's Tale, The Tempest, Cymbeline, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Love's Labour's Lost, Much Ado About Nothing, All's Well That Ends Well, The Taming of the Shrew, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Twelfth Night, As You Like It, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Measure for Measure, The Comedy of Errors, The Merchant of Venice, Pericles, Prince of Tyre.
- Histories: King John, King Richard II, King Henry IV (in two volumes), King Henry V, King Henry VI (in three volumes), King Richard III, King Henry VIII.
The entire 'Rainbow' series uses the text of The New Temple Shakespeare, adopting modernised spelling. None of the volumes has scholarly notes, but they benefit from some wonderful introductions, including some written by legendary figures of the stage, such as Donald Wolfit, Paul Scofield, Glen Byam Shaw, Lawrence Olivier and Richard Burton to name a few.
The illustrations are primarily costume and/or set designs from productions of the plays in question, and a wide number of artists have contributed to these, including Salvador Dali, Noguchi, Timothy O’Brien, Roger Furse and Oliver Messel.
Condition
Overall, very good books, with binding square and secure, and pages clean and bright throughout, with only light foxing to the edges of the 'Richard II' volume and the occasional spot of wear, shallow bump or discolouration. None of the volumes come with slipcases. This is probably one of the best sets we have seen when it comes to condition, as these are more often than not found quite worn and discoloured, while this set is very bright and clean. A lovely set, albeit without the original slipcases.
