The Railway Children by E. Nesbit

Published by The Folio Society in 1999 (Seventh Printing, 2014). Introduced by Helen Cresswell, illustrated by Inga Moore. 228 × 160 × 25 mm. Pp. [i–viii] ix–xv [xvi–xviii], 1–188 [189–192]: [7] leaves of colour ‘plates’ (facing pp. 18, 41, 66, 80, 101, 117 and 175). Type: Fournier with Richmond for display. Printed by Memminger MedienCentrum. Bound by Real Lachenmaier. Full white cloth with a design in green, black, orange and pale grey-brown by Moore; pale grey-brown endleaves. Dark green slip case. In addition to the colour ‘plates’ and title-spread there are eight monochrome tail-piece drawings by the artist.

Interestingly, this run is printed on Abbey Lynx paper, as opposed to some of the very early impressions of this edition, which have been printed on Klippan Book Design smooth paper. The Abbey Lynx paper is thicker, creamier and more luxurious feeling, and the book feels much more substantial in one's hands and is visibly thicker. I have been surprised to see how different it feels from the very earlier editions.

Condition

Near-fine book with lightest external wear, pages tightly bound and free of inscriptions. In equally near-fine slipcase with a little shelf-wear.
