SANDWYK, Charles van. The Meaning of Mice. Translated for Humans by Charles van Sandwyk. London: The Folio Society, 2021. First printing thus. 143 × 112 × 11 mm. Pp. [1–20]. Hand-drawn lettering. Printed in colour and bound by C & C Offset in full dark green paper blocked in gold with a printed inset illustration; printed endleaves. Not issued in a slip case. Concertina style binding. ‘Befitting my stature, this is a short tale, quietly told’ with six pages of illustrated text, 12 full-page illustrations and an illustrated title-page.
A fine copy with pages clean and uninscribed.
Originally published in 2002 by The Fairy Press in Vancouver, this new edition features especially-drawn illustrations for the back of the concertina fold. It is suggested that readers follow the pictorial narrative from right to left, as mice are well known for often working counter-clockwise. Appeared first in The Folio Society's 2021 Christmas collection in a charmingly small format.
A uniquely tactile treat for book-lovers of all ages, The Meaning of Mice contains 16 delightfully illustrated pages concertinaed between a handsome binding that tells the story of the well-to-do Painter Mouse. The binding features an elegant inset label, and van Sandwyk’s distinctive calligraphy blocked in gold. A treasure from a golden age, The Meaning of Mice is a gift to be passed down through the generations.
"With The Meaning of Mice I wanted to give the world a new story. One that might make you look at the Painter Mouse a second time and wonder what his day holds." (Charles van Sandwyk)
A tale told in very few words with illustrations that speak volumes. Every line of ink suggests a wider, more intricate world hiding just under our noses, from the neatly dressed Painter Mouse with his tailcoat and top hat, to the beautifully observed details such as the matchbox that serves as an umbrella stand.
