TOLKIEN, J. R. R.  The Lord of the Rings, comprising The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. 

London: George Allen & Unwin. First editions, impressions 12th, 9th and 9th respectively, all printed in 1962. Complete in three volumes. Octavo (23 x 15 x 10cm), pp.423 [1]; pp.352; pp.416. With a folding map at the rear of each volume. Publisher's dark red cloth, title and decorative ring stamped on spine in gilt, plain endpapers, edges trimmed, top edge stained red, fore- and bottom edges unstained. With the correct-impression grey wove paper dust wrappers, lettered to front and spine and with the "Ring and Eye" device in black, red and gold, all unclipped, each priced at 21s net.

The three volumes are in similar, very clean condition overall, with bright gilt lettering, bindings firm and pages free from previous owner's inscriptions. Please see below individual descriptions.

  1. The Fellowship of the Ring (12th impression, 1962).  Spine tips slightly bumped and darkened; covers a little bowed; a few marks to the edges; a handful of leaves with minuscule clips to the outer extremities. In the dust jacket, which is unevenly tanned to the rear panel, spine, and extremities, with a stain to the upper spine, and a little nibbled and creased at the extremities.
  2. The Two Towers (9th impression, 1962). Spine tips slightly bumped; a couple of minuscule spots of wear to the upper portion of the boards. In the dust jacket that is tanned to spine, joints and extremities, with some light staining to spine, and with a few short nicks to extremities.
  3. The Return of the King (9th impression, 1962). Spine tips slightly bumped; slight nick to the fabric to head of spine. In the dust jacket, which is unevenly tanned to the front panel, spine, and extremities, and a little nibbled and creased at the extremities.

All dust wrappers have now been placed in archival wrappers for protection. A good, clean set overall.
