The Lily of Life: A Fairy Tale, by The Crown Princess of Roumania. London, New York, Toronto: Hodder and Stoughton, [Undated], but circa 1913. With a preface by Carmen Sylva. Illustrated by Helen Stratton with 18 tipped-in colour plates.

First trade edition, first impression. Sized 19.5 x 25.5cm. Pp. xi, 145. Publisher's original cream cloth, richly ornate in gilt to upper cover and spine, with colour onlay to upper cover, top edge gilt and illustrated endpapers. Richly illustrated throughout with 18 beautiful colour plates in an Art Nouveau style by Stratton.

A good plus copy, externally very bright with only minor soiling to covers, a little bumping to spine tips, minor wear to corners, and the small onlay to front laminated. Joints are secure, hinges are weak and cracked with front one ever-so-slightly detached, and there is some mild cracking to gutter throughout, but no pages are loose. There is moderate foxing to page edges and prelims and sporadically throughout. Clean and uninscribed throughout save for a pencilled annotation to first blank. All plates, as called for, are present and are in wonderful, clean condition with sharp corners and no creases.

A very scarce example of this fairy tale about twin princesses Corona and Mora who fall in love with the same Prince. Written by Crown Princess, later Queen, Marie of Romania, the granddaughter of Queen Victoria, wife of King Ferdinand I and the final Queen of Romania, crowned the year following this work's publication. She wrote many works on both her country and fairy tales for children, this being her debut book. Some of these works include The Dreamer of Dreams (1913), The Stealers of Light: A Legend (1916), The Story of Naughty Kildeen (1922), and The Lost Princess: A Fairy Tale (1927).
