Illustrated by Helen Stratton with 18 tipped-in full-page colour plates, as called for. First edition, first impression. Sized 19.5 x 25.5cm. Pp. xi, 145. A scarce example.

Written by Crown Princess, later Queen, Marie of Romania, the granddaughter of Queen Victoria, wife of King Ferdinand I and the final Queen of Romania, crowned the year following this work's publication. She wrote many works on both her country and fairy tales for children, this being her debut book.

Condition

Publisher's original cloth binding with gilt decoration and lettering to front board and spine. Externally in good condition, however with some edgewear, discolouration and light soiling in places. Small piece missing at the tail of the spine. Corners bumped. Binding is fragile and shaken with pages beginning to come loose if not handled with care. Internally, there is foxing to pages. Small sticker stuck to front paste-down endpaper and inscription in pen on the back free-endpaper. Minimal chipping to pages otherwise. Tipped-in plates in wonderful condition with all content clean and legible. Complete example.
