CLARENDON, Edward Hyde, Earl of.  The History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars In England, Begun in the Year 1641. With the precedent Passages, and Actions, that contributed thereunto, and the happy End, and Conclusion thereof by the King's blessed Restoration, and Return, upon the 29th of May, in the year 1660.  Oxford: Printed At The Theater, 1706 (Vol II, Part 2) - 1707 (all others).

An early edition of the first detailed account from a key player in the events it covered.  Three volumes in six, each volume consisting of two parts.  230 X 145 mm (Vol I, Part 1; Vol I, Part 2; Vol II, Part 2, Vol III, Part 1); 207 x 135 mm (Vol II, Part 1); 200 x 133 mm (Vol III, Part 2).  Collation: Vol I, Part 1 – XXV, 288pp; Vol I, Part 2 – 289-720pp; Vol II, Part 1 – 466pp; Vol II, Part 2 – 467-753pp; Vol III, Part 1 – 364pp; Vol III, Part 2 – 365-773, [73] pp of Index. Each part illustrated with a frontispiece. Vol I, Part 1 and Vol II, Part 1 with half-titles (others bound without).

Contemporary panelled calf, black morocco labels to spines, five raised bands to the four taller volumes, four to the two shorter ones, ruling to label compartments, blind tooling to others, top edge coloured on three volumes (perhaps discoloured to the others).  Professionally repaired with the original boards retained and superimposed, and new endpapers.

With the armorial bookplate of William Fuller Maitland of Stansted Hall, Essex, loosely inserted in each volume. Maitland was the son of Ebenezer Fuller Maitland of Stansted, Essex, and Park Place, Henley-on-Thames. He was the grandson of Ebenezer Maitland, a West India merchant based in London and partner in Maitland, Bond and Ede, and director of the Bank of England from 1798.

Externally a very smart-looking, professionally-restored set; minor rubbing to extremities, the occasional small wormhole to boards, and a few small marks to the tanned edges. Internally, firmly bound, with hinges intact; pages are lightly age-toned and clean with only small inscriptions in pen to the two half-titles, frontispiece and title pages, as shown, some heavier foxing to some extremities, a few sporadic marks unaffecting text, a handful of small marginal tears and a few wormholes to a handful of page extremities in Vol III, Part 1.

The History of the Rebellion is Edward Hyde’s firsthand chronicle of the English Civil War. In it, he records and critiques the strategies employed by both Royalist and Parliamentary forces; though a Royalist himself, Hyde was often scathing in his assessment of Royalist commanders and deeply shocked by the execution of Charles I. When Charles II sought to reclaim the throne, Hyde joined him, becoming his chief adviser and later Lord Chancellor. He believed the Stuart monarchs’ greatest failing was allowing their sound judgement to be undermined by the influence of court favourites. Recognised as one of the most important historians of his era, Hyde’s work proved highly influential on publication. He was also the grandfather of Queens Mary II and Anne.
