The series of eight volumes of Gibbon’s ‘Decline and fall’ continued to be published by the Society, one a year, between 1983 and 1990. In 1995 the eight volumes began to be issued together. Gibbon’s Memoirs of my life were added in 1991 and a complementary atlas was published in the same year. Each volume of the main work was typeset in a uniform style, with the same dark red-brown buckram binding, based on a design of around 1780 attributed to Henry Walther. Around 1988 the manufacturer of the buckram abandoned the traditional starch-sized cloth in favour of a waterproof alternative. In order to keep the series uniform, a vast quantity of the old-style cloth was purchased, and continued to be used until 1990, by which time the buckrams most commonly used for Folio books had an acrylic coating. The ‘plates’ reproduce photographs of surviving Roman buildings and antiquities, and etchings, mostly showing Roman views, many taken from G.B. Piranesi’s Vedute di Roma ([1748–1788]), with others from James Stuart and Nicholas Revett’s Antiquities of Athens (1762–1816) and other seventeenth- and eighteenth-century works. The endleaf maps are different in each of the volumes.
A good-only, read set, with bindings square and firm, and pages clean, with spines ever-so-slightly discoloured, slight bumping to some spine tips, and a couple of stains to spine of volume III. In structurally-sound but worn slipcases with some discolouration and staining.
