HENLAND, Cecil (Arranged by).  The Ghosts of My Friends.  170 x 102 mm. London: Dow & Lester, circa 1908 (date of earliest signature and through copies held at the Victoria and Albert Museum Libraries).

Publisher's blind-stamped cloth with a repeated pattern, picture to front, gilt titles to upper cover and spine; no dustwrapper.  Scuffs to the binding and bumps to extremities, gilt a little rubbed, location stamp to FFEP (Fore Street, Framlingham), tear with unprofessional repair to the page featuring Miller's 1909 "ghost signature", a couple of breaks to gutter; else a clean example with pages well bound, and 39 pages used, with 9 remaining unused.

Arranged by Cecil Henland, 'The Ghost Of My Friends' is an autograph book of 'Ghost Signatures' that enjoyed a surge of popularity during the early 1900s. To create the effect, a person would sign along the fold of the paper with a fountain pen, and the paper was then folded back upon itself. The slow-drying India ink created Rorschach - like inkblots test. In this volume is an array of strange and lovely forms created by 38 pages of signatures from 1908 to 1918, with a few left blank.

Names written include John Bryans Brownsord and family members, Frank and Alice Dales, Dorothy Read, Hilda White, Kate Smith, Ethel Yebb, Stanley D. Gibbons and family members, Winnifred Challice, K. Miller, J. M. Peckey and many more individuals.

Cecil Henland produced this work and similar blank books such as 'The Christmas Book' which was for writing wish-lists, and 'Your Hidden Skeleton' which is of a similar vein to this work.
