The Ghost Book: Sixteen New Stories of the Uncanny, compiled by Lady Cynthia Asquith. London: Hutchinson and Co. (Publishers) Ltd., [Undated], but known as 1926. First UK edition. Scarce. Accompanied by a signed letter from the author addressed to British Actor Sir John Anthony Quayle.
Publisher's original cloth blindstamped with lettering and illustrations to front cover and spine, plain endpapers; lacking the ultra-scarce dust jacket. A good example of this scarce anthology. The spine is uniformly faded, spine ends and corners are bumped and a little worn, some small stains to rear cover. Binding is firm, square and secure. Distinct foxing and tanning to page extremities, two small holes punched into the top edge of front endpapers, visible scuff to front endpaper. Boards are slightly bowed. Else a very nice example.
Laid in is an autograph signed letter from Lady Cynthia Asquith, on her own headed paper with address of 15 Queen's Gate Gardens and dated 15 Sep 1955, written in her hand and signed at the close. Addressed to British Actor Sir John Anthony Quayle, Lady Asquith warmly praises his theatrical performance: "Dear Mr Quayle, Thank you so much for your very nice letter. Since I wrote it, I’ve seen the magnificent production of Titus Andronicus, and with no disrespect to any “bright particular star”, I think your performance as Aaron the best thing in the whole of this year’s Festival. Nor have I yet found anyone to disagree with me! I would have loved to see you both again, but had the feeling that you must be prohibitively busy. Next year, perhaps. Meanwhile renewed congratulations. Yours very sincerely, Cynthia Asquith.". The paper is slightly tanned and rubbed to corners, with a penciled line on one side; otherwise fine.
The Ghost Book, Cynthia Asquith's supernatural anthology, is the first in "one of the most distinguished series of ghost story anthologies in this century". Asquith "had a remarkable talent for getting first-rate material from both mainstream and genre writers; all her anthologies [...] are essential reading for ghost story enthusiasts (Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 14). Includes the following stories: "The Villa Désirée" (May Sinclair), "Chemical" (Algernon Blackwood), "The Duenna" (Mrs. Belloc Lowndes), "A Visitor from Down Under" (L. P. Hartley), "The Lost Tragedy" (Denis Mackail), "Spinsters’ Rest" (Clemence Dane), "Mrs. Lunt" (Hugh Walpole), "Munitions of War" (Arthur Machen), "The Rocking-Horse Winner" (D. H. Lawrence), "A Recluse" (Walter de la Mare), "The Corner Shop" (C. L. Ray), "Two Trifles: 1. The Ether Hogs; 2. The Mortal" (Oliver Onions), "Twelve O’Clock" (Charles Whibley), "The Amorous Ghost" (Enid Bagnold), "Mr. Tallent’s Ghost" (Mary Webb), "Pargiton and Harby" (Desmond MacCarthy). A brilliant collection of eerie happenings, haunted minds, and quiet terrors.
