The Forsyte Saga, by John Galsworthy. London: The Folio Society, 1984. First printing thus. 241 × 171 × 21–29 mm. 3 vols (see below). Type: Perpetua. Printed by New Western Printing, the lithographs by Cowell. Bound by Butler and Tanner in quarter orange canvas, cream paper boards patterned in a different colour for each volume; cream endleaves decorated in the same colour as the boards. Blue and cream three-volume slip case patterned in blue. The three volumes were first published in 1906, 1920 and 1921 respectively, and were first reprinted as the ‘saga’ in 1922. The illustrations by Anthony Gross are taken from an edition published by Heinemann in 1950; his drawings are also used on the endleaves and slip case.
The three volumes are as follows:
[1] The Forsyte Saga, The Man of Property by John Galsworthy, drawings by Anthony Gross. Pp. [1–4] 5–406 [407–408]: [5] leaves of colour plates (facing pp. [1], 48, 192, 273 and 397). The boards and endleaves are printed in red-brown. In addition to the plates there are 14 full-page drawings, and 12 head- and tail-pieces by Gross, printed from line-blocks in the text.
[2] The Forsyte Saga, In Chancery by John Galsworthy, drawings by Anthony Gross. Pp. [1–2] 4–310 [311–312]: [4] leaves of colour plates (facing pp. [1], 160, 234 and 276). The boards and endleaves are printed in blue-green. In addition to the plates there are nine full-page drawings, and 14 head- and tail-pieces by Gross, printed from line-blocks in the text.
[3] The Forsyte Saga, To Let by John Galsworthy, drawings by Anthony Gross. Pp. [1–2] 3–268 [269–272]: [3] leaves of colour and monochrome plates (facing pp. [1], 129 and 244). The boards and endleaves are printed in green. In addition to the plates there are five full-page drawings, and 14 head- and tail-pieces by Gross, printed from line-blocks in the text.
Lightest wear to corners, mild sunning to spines; else clean and uninscribed, with pages tightly bound. In a very good slipcase that is a little worn in places, with a few very faded stains to panels, and with a small nick to top; structurally sound.
A lovely edition - the very first of this title to be published by the Folio Society - of Galsworthy’s sweeping family chronicle that follows the lives, loves, and conflicts of the wealthy Forsyte family across several generations against the backdrop of a changing England from the Victorian era to the 1920s
