Publisher's original green paper binding, with title to spine, further title and colour illustration by Tolkien of Father Christmas and the Northern Lights (from p. 10) to front cover, and colour illustration by Tolkien of Polar Bear having fallen upon his nose (from p. 15). Missing the circular gold price label affixed to rear cover. Issued without dust wrapper, published on 2 September 1976 at £2.50 as part of a run of 50,000 copies. 48pp, 27.6 x 21.9 cm.

There is light bumping to corners and mild crushing to spine tips; else a very good copy with clean, bright pages, uninscribed and a lovely, brightly-coloured spine. Often harder to find without that pesky sunning to spine.

Contains most of the letters J. R. R. Tolkien, as 'Father Christmas', wrote and illustrated for his children, beginning in 1920 when his first son, John, was three, and continuing until 1943. The letters through 1939 are transcribed. Some of the manuscripts and 'almost all of the pictures' are reproduced, most of them in colour. (Hammond, J.R.R. Tolkien: A Descriptive Bibliography, 1993)
