TROLLOPE, Anthony. The Duke’s Children. London: The Folio Society, 2015. Type: Miller. Printed by Memminger MedienCentrum on Caxton Cream Wove paper and bound by Real Lachenmaier. Dark green silk marker in each volume. Green cloth two-volume clamshell box, lined on two sides with dark red paper.

Limited, Numbered Edition, one of the (fewer) copies bound in full goatskin leather.

The two volumes are as follows:

[1] Anthony Trollope, The Duke’s Children, The Complete Text, reconstructed and edited by Steven Amarnick, assisted by Robert F. Wiseman with Susan Lowell Humphreys, introduced by Joanna Trollope. 241 × 166 × 56 mm. Pp. [i–vi] vii–xiv, [1–2] 3–702 [703–706]. Full green Indian goatskin leather with all three edges and the endleaves hand-marbled by Jemma Lewis. Leaf preceding the title-page reads in part ‘limited to 1980 numbered copies, and 20 lettered copies hors de commerce’; this is copy number 279. A printed line counter is loosely inserted to aid reading the commentary volume alongside.

This is the first time the novel has been published in the form Trollope intended, using the original manuscript now held by the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. The standard issue supplied to Folio Society members was bound in half leather with cloth sides, top edge gilt, and housed in a slipcase. However, members were also offered — at just over twice the price — a superior state specially bound in full green Indian goatskin leather, with edges hand-marbled by Jemma Lewis and housed in a two-volume clamshell box, as is the case with the set offered here. The decision to marble only the more "deluxe" issue arose from practical necessity, as marbling the edges of every copy risked delaying publication beyond the bicentenary of Trollope’s birth.

[2] Commentary to the First Complete Edition of The Duke’s Children, by Anthony Trollope, contributors: Steven Amarnick, Robert F. Wiseman, Susan Lowell Humphreys, Michael G. Williamson. 240 × 161 × 18 mm. Pp. [i–vi], 1–150 [151–154]: [1] plate (facing p. [iii]). Full green canvas blocked in gold; printed endleaves reproduce the opening and closing pages from Trollope’s original manuscript. A photograph of Trollope by Julia Margaret Cameron is used for the frontispiece.

Condition

The books are in near-fine condition, with bindings square and firm, and pages clean and uninscribed, showing only a couple of innocuous spots of wear, as pictured. Housed in a good-only clamshell case, the panels faintly stained, with partial tearing to two edges of the inner well; nevertheless remaining structurally sound.
