The Dreamer of Dreams, by Marie, Queen of Romania (1875–1938). London, New York & Toronto: Hodder & Stoughton, [1915]. First edition. Complete with preeminent illustrator Edmund Dulac’s plates and rare dust-jacket.
Quarto (183 × 245 mm). Publisher’s Alice blue cloth with gilt titling and blue decoration on upper board and spine, buff dust-jacket printed in green with duplicate of frontispiece plate affixed to upper panel. Half-title, six tipped-in colour plates by Dulac plus duplicate plate on dust-jacket, printed tissue guards, dedication page and publisher’s advertisement page at rear for Queen of Roumania's previous publication, The Lily of Life.
Covers evenly discoloured with a little wear to joints, corners bumped and spine tips lightly crushed, foxing to edges. Joints and front hinge are in good order, the rear hinge is partly broken with netting exposed, and throughout there are a couple of breaks with only one page and its tissue guard loose; else a securely bound copy. There is slight offsetting to prelims with a small inscribed name to FFEP, and moderate foxing throughout, none affecting the beautiful plates which are in wonderful condition. The very rare dust jacket is unclipped and unrestored, with a little nibbling to extremities and a small amount of loss to spine tips, slightly toned to spine and with the duplicate plate having a small, creased corner.
A scarce copy, very rarely found with its original dust jacket of this wonderful fairy tale by the last Queen consort of Romania, following an artist on a mythic journey to find his muse and restore the fortunes of a troubled kingdom. Complete with preeminent illustrator Edmund Dulac’s plates and rare dust-jacket.
Queen, Marie of Romania was the granddaughter of Queen Victoria, wife of King Ferdinand I and the final Queen of Romania. She wrote many works on both her country and fairy tales for children, this being her second book after The Lily of Life. Some of the subsequent works include The Stealers of Light: A Legend (1916), The Story of Naughty Kildeen (1922), and The Lost Princess: A Fairy Tale (1927).
