The Complete Novels of Mrs Ann Radcliffe. London: The Folio Society, [1987]. First printing thus. Designed by David Eccles. 6 vols (see below). Type: Caledonia with Thorowgood and Fraktur Bold for display. Typeset by Tradespools, printed and bound by the Bath Press. Quarter black cloth, dark purple-red paper boards with a repeat pattern in black; dark purple-red endleaves. Dark red six-volume slip case with the title of the series on the front and back panels. Each volume in the set followed the text of the first edition, and was illustrated with a full-page wood-engraved frontispiece by Sarah van Niekerk. The text is decorated with typographical ornaments, used to make up a head-piece and factotum at the beginning of each chapter, and for other decorations. 

The six volumes are as follows: 

[1] The castles of Athlin and Dunblane, a highland story by Ann Radcliffe, introduction by Devendra P. Varma, wood-engraving by Sarah van Niekerk. 251 × 158 × 14 mm. Pp. [i–vi] vii–xv [xvi–xviii], 1–98 [99–100]: wood-engraved frontispiece. First published in 1789. 

[2] A Sicilian romance by Ann Radcliffe, introduction by Devendra P. Varma, wood-engraving by Sarah van Niekerk. 251 × 160 × 20 mm. Pp. [i–vi] vii–xii [xiii–xiv], 1–166 [167]: wood-engraved frontispiece. First published in 1790. 

[3] The romance of the forest by Ann Radcliffe, introduction by Devendra P. Varma, wood-engraving by Sarah van Niekerk. 251 × 160 × 27 mm. Pp. [i–vi] vii–x [xi–xiv], 1–334 [335–336]: wood-engraved frontispiece. First published in 1791. 

[4] The mysteries of Udolpho, a romance by Ann Radcliffe, introduction by Devendra P. Varma, wood-engraving by Sarah van Niekerk. 252 × 163 × 43 mm. Pp. [i–vi] vii–xiii [xiv], 1–710 [711–712]: wood-engraved frontispiece. First published in 1794. 

[5] The Italian, or The confessional of the black penitents by Ann Radcliffe, introduction by Devendra P. Varma, wood-engraving by Sarah van Niekerk. 251 × 162 × 33 mm. Pp. [i–iii] iv–xiii [xiv], 1–433 [434]: wood-engraved frontispiece. First published in 1797. 

[6] Gaston de Blondeville, or The court of Henry the Third keeping festival in Arden by Ann Radcliffe, introduction by Devendra P. Varma, wood-engraving by Sarah van Niekerk. 251 × 160 × 25 mm. Pp. [i–vi] vii–xi [xii], 1–241 [242]: wood-engraved frontispiece. The text was written in 1802, but was not published until 1826.

Fine books with pages tightly bound and free of any inscriptions. A slightly-too-tight fit in the original slipcase. Slipcase in very good condition, with a little marking and wear to extremities.
