Illustrated by RACKHAM, Arthur
The Compleat Angler or The Contemplative Man's Recreation Being a Discourse of Rivers, Fishponds, Fish and Fishing not unworthy the Perusal of most Anglers. By Izaak Walton. London: George C. Harrap, 1931.
Illustrated by Arthur Rackham with a colour frontispiece and eleven colour plates separated by tissue guards, as well as 25 in-text line drawings, as called for.
First edition thus of Izaak Walton's important seventeenth century guide to fishing. In its original dust wrapper. Sized 25.5 x 18.5cm. Pp. 224. A lovely, handsome example.
Condition
Publisher's original cloth binding with gilt decoration and lettering to front board and spine. Externally in very good condition, however with some edgewear and mild discolouration in places. Spine tips bumped, but corners straight. Foxing to edges. Binding is tight (although not as on a new copy) with inner hinges intact. Some very small inscriptions in pencil to front endpapers which can be erased. Internally, there is minimal foxing to pages and a sporadic crease or two. All plates in in wonderful condition with all content clean and legible. Complete example. Presenting well in a good, unclipped dust wrapper with bright, but slightly grubby panels. Slight discolouration to spine with some lettering faded. Some chipping to head and base of the dust jacket with some small closed tears. Small loss present, as pictured. The dust wrapper has now been placed in a removable, protective sleeve of archival quality.
