The Chronicles of Narnia, by C. S. Lewis. London: The Folio Society, 1996. Second printing thus, 1998.. 204 × 148 × 18–23 mm. 7 vols (see below). Type: Bembo. Printed by the Saint Edmundsbury Press. Bound by Hunter and Foulis in full green cloth with an armorial design in silver and gold by David Eccles (incorporating the title as above); cream endleaves. Gold seven-volume slip case with Pauline Baynes’s map of Narnia in colour. The seven volumes contain a total of 126 line-drawings by Baynes, all reprinted from the first editions published between 1950 and 1956. The seven volumes are as follows:
[1] C.S. Lewis, The Magician’s Nephew, illustrated by Pauline Baynes. Pp. [1–8] 9–191 [192].
[2] C.S. Lewis, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, illustrated by Pauline Baynes. Pp. [1–8] 9–172 [173–176].
[3] C.S. Lewis, The Horse and His Boy, illustrated by Pauline Baynes. Pp. [1–10] 11–207 [208].
[4] C.S. Lewis, Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia, illustrated by Pauline Baynes. Pp. [1–8] 9–206 [207–208].
[5] C.S. Lewis, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, illustrated by Pauline Baynes. Pp. [1–10] 11–230 [231–232].
[6] C.S. Lewis, The Silver Chair, illustrated by Pauline Baynes. Pp. [1–10] 11–224.
[7] C.S. Lewis, The Last Battle, illustrated by Pauline Baynes. Pp. [1–6] 7–192.
Good plus books. Each of the seven volumes is heavily inscribed to front paste-down in blue pen and a few grubby marks to a handful of pages. There is ever-so-light wear to covers and edges, as well as some small bumps to the upper corners of ‘The Magician’s Nephew’ volume; else a very clean set with pages clean and securely bound. In a worn slipcase that is, as usual for this edition, marked to panels and split to most joints; still structurally sound. Not a collector’s item, but the volumes would certainly make excellent reading copies and would still look lovely on any shelf.
