The Chimes by Charles Dickens. London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1913]. Illustrated by Hugh Thomson with 7 tipped-in full-page colour plates, as called for.

First edition illustrated by Hugh Thomson. Pp. v, 138.

A goblin story of some bells that rang an old year out and a new year in.

Condition

Publisher's original deep blue cloth binding with beautiful gilt illustrations and lettering to front, and lettering and decoration to spine. Cloth very slightly worn and grubby, and mild tanning and staining to spine. Joints intact. Foxing to edges. Binding very good with hinges in good condition. Pages very well bound with none loose. Lovely, illustrated endpapers with Christmas dedication in pen to front ("To the Noble Knight of Wentworth" and the "fair ladies", his sisters. With Love + Best Wishes, from Rona Locke Bremner, Christmas 1918). Upon further research, it looks like Rona Locke Bremner would later become the wife of Scottish playwright, screenwriter and physician James Bridie. Light foxing to prelims and little tanning throughout. Small stain to front paste-down endpaper. All plates in wonderful condition, all content clean, however with patches of acidic transfer left by the plates. A complete, very nice example.
