The Brothers Karamazov, by Fyodor Dostoevsky. Limited Editions Club, 1933.
In a nutshell: (3v.). Illustrated with wash drawings by Alexander King who has signed the book. Translated by Constance Garnett. Introduced by Avrahm Yarmolinsky. Printed by D.B.Updike at the Merrymount Press. Page tops gilt, others uncut. Quarter bound in beige linen, paper covers printed with a geometric pattern, different colour for each volume, printed spine label. Blue/green paper covered slipcase with spine label printed in red. 408pp., 352pp., 396pp. 28.6x21.6cm. 1500 copies.
Printed and bound at the Merrymount Press in Boston in three volumes. Quarter-bound in a yellowish cloth, with patterned paste paper sides (pfeistpapier) hand-made in Boston by well-known bookbinder and historian of decorated papers Rosamond Loring; each book in a different colour. A symbolic binding that was rather suggestive of a Russian book at the time. The tope edges are gilt, the others left deckled. Printed on paper that was made completely of rags by Tileston and Hollingsworth of Bostom; a paper that is soft and limp to the touch, but that has a natural look and a rough surface. Typed in Granjon, a type designed and issued only a few years previous by the dean of all English printers, George W. Jones.
In the translation of Constance Garnett which was, at the time, the best of the available translations, herewith carefully edited throughout by Dr. Avrahm Yarmolinsky who headed the section devoted to Russian books at the New York Public Library. Dr. Yarmolinsky also provided an informative, thought-provoking introduction and a short note explaining the editing work he has done to improve Mrs. Garnett's translation. In their 1938 Monthly Letter, the LEC felt this was, "am endlichsten, the proper translation of The Brothers Karamazov into English".
Illustrated with eighteen portraits of Alyosha, Ivan, Zosima, Mitya and their companions, by Alexander King who previously illustrated the very popular Limited Editions Club edition of Gulliver's Travels. The portraits were printed by the litographic process in black and two shades of blue. The third volume is also signed by Mr King and hand-numbered 548.
Condition-wise, the books are in good plus condition, with a little rubbing to extremities and spine labels, and with clean, uninscribed interiors. There was some pencil underlining inside the books when the set came into our hands, but we have now erased this. The volumes are housed in a worn slipcase that shows rubbing and marking to all sides, but structurally sound and fit for purpose.
A fitting edition of Dostoevsky's last and greatest novel; both a brilliantly told crime story and a passionate philosophical debate on God, free will, and morality.
