The Book of the Thousand Nights and One Night. London: The Folio Society, 1958. Third impression, published in July 1973, this being one of the 500 copies offered by the Society in a luxurious full leather binding with a special design.

Rendered into English from the literal and complete French translation of Dr J.C. Mardrus by Powys Mathers . . . Volumes I and III illustrated with drawings by Eric Fraser. Volumes II and IV illustrated with wood-engravings by Frank Martin. Narrow Royal 8vo (254 × 161 × 34–36 mm). 4 vols (pp. [i–iv] v–vii [viii–xii], 1–644: [13] leaves of line-block ‘plates’; [i–iv] v–vii [viii], 1–592: [13] leaves of wood-engraved ‘plates’; [i–iv] v–vii [viii], 1–569 [570–572]: [13] leaves of line-block ‘plates’; [i–iv] v–vii [viii], 1–537 [538– 540]: [13] leaves of wood-engraved ‘plates’). Type: Fournier. Printed and bound by Richard Clay on specially-made paper.

Unlike the standard edition which was bound in quarter white parchment with red paper boards patterned in gold, this limited run was bound in full Chieftain goatskin blocked with a design in gold by Jeff Clements, with dark green endleaves, gilt tops, set caps, and a forest-green cloth-covered slipcase. It sold in 1973 for the princely sum of £38.50 (the standard edition was £16.50) and, aside from the luxurious binding, the contents were identical to that of the standard. Since this limited run is unnumbered, it is difficult to confirm whether 500 copies were actually printed; however, given the common practice with other limited editions of the time, it is likely that far fewer were ultimately produced.

Very good books that are a little worn to spines in a handful of places, as pictured; else near-fine, with pages clean and bright, and text blocks square and tightly bound; these books are unlikely to have been more than flicked through once or twice. Housed in a slipcase with wear to its fabric, but that has no split joints and no bumps.

A scarce, outstanding edition of this legendary collection of Middle Eastern and South Asian captivating tales told by Scheherazade in an attempt to delay her execution. Throughout these pages, one will return to famous stories like Aladdin, Sinbad the Sailor, and Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.
