Tales of Mystery and Imagination by Edgar Allan Poe. London: The Folio Society,  1999. First printing thus. illustrated by Harry Clarke. 252 × 192 × 48 mm. Pp. [1–8] 9–333 [334–336]: [24] leaves of ‘plates’. Type: Ehrhardt with Caslon for display. Printed by the Saint Edmundsbury Press. Bound by Jarrold in full black buckram with a spine-design in gold, cover-label printed in green-grey and black; black endleaves. Black slip case.

Poe’s tales had formerly been published by Folio in 1957 and 1990. The present edition is based on that published by George Harrap and Company in 1919, with an additional illustration for ‘The Pit and the Pendulum’ taken from an edition of 1933. In addition to Clarke’s remarkable art nouveau illustrations, there are two head-pieces and numerous grisly tail-pieces for the stories.

A good copy, with spine tips a little crushed and the label on the front board very mildly worn to upper extremity; else a clean, tightly-bound copy, with pages uninscribed. Housed in like slipcase that is unfortunately a little bumped (particularly to upper front corner) and slightly shelf-worn to panels, but structurally sound.
