SMITH, Charles.  Smith's New English Atlas Being a Complete Set of County Maps, Divided into Hundreds on which are delineated all the Direct and Cross Roads Part of which are from actual Measurement.  Cities, Towns and most considerable Villages, Parks, Gentlemen’s Seats, Rivers and Navigable Canals: Preceded by a General Map of England and Wales on which the principle Roads are carefully described, for the purpose of facilitating the connexion of the respective Maps.  The whole accompanied by an Index Villaris, containing upwards of Forty Thousand Names of Places mentioned in the work, with reference to their Situation.

Smith, Mapseller, No. 172 (Corner of Surrey Street) Strand, 1804.  First edition.  Folio (543 x 378 mm), rebound in half morocco without title to spine, hand-marbled paper boards, new endpapers.  With engraved title page, engraved Contents and Explanation, 42 maps of the counties of England and Wales on 46 sheets (all in early wash colour), 53 pages of Index on names of places contained, and list of subscribers on 2 pages.

Good, complete condition, with all maps, title and content pages, index and list of subscribers present, as called for, with binding firm and square, and joints and hinges strong.  The title page in particular is foxed with a few stains (unaffecting text), margins are a little soiled throughout, a few leaves have marginal loss (not to content), some slight tears or repairs along fold, a few creases and a little soiling to a few maps, title and contents leaves a bit creased.  Two maps - Kent and Somerset - have some pencil inscriptions in blue.  Spotting throughout, but not affecting legibility.  Still an excellent example of this first edition of this atlas of large-scale, with detailed county maps of England and Wales clean, clear and legible.

Maps include: Bedfordshire, berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Cheshire, Cornwall, Cumberland, Derbyshire, Devonshire, Dorsetshire, Durham, Essex, Glocestershire, Hampshire, Herfordshire, Hertfordshire, Huntingdonshire, Kent, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Middlesex, Monmouthshire, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Northumberland, Nottinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Rutlandshire, Shropshire, Somersetshire, Staffordshire, Suffolk, Surrey, Sussex, Warwickshire, Westmoreland, Wiltshire, Worcestershire, Yorkshire (4 sheets), Wales (2 maps).
