Sherlock Holmes, Complete Stories [Second Series, The Novels], A. Conan Doyle. London: The Folio Society, 1994. First printing thus. 222 × 144 × 23–29 mm. 4 vols (see below). Type: Baskerville. Printed and bound by Butler and Tanner. Full green-brown cloth decorated as the first series. Black four-volume slip case titled in gold. The first series of five volumes, containing all the short stories, had been published in 1993.
This set was advertised as the ‘Complete Novels’, but the slip case manufacturer used the blocking brass from the ‘Complete Stories’ instead, and this error was allowed to stand. However, some copies were made up using the correct brass, in case of complaints.
The four volumes are as follows:
[1] A Study in Scarlet, introduced by Michael S. Cox, illustrated by Francis Mosley. Pp. [1–8] 9–180: [6] leaves of ‘plates’ (facing pp. 28, 61, 95, 112, 123 and 166). A short novel, and Holmes’s first appearance in print.
[2] The Sign of Four, Arthur Conan Doyle, illustrated by Francis Mosley. Pp. [1–10] 11–161 [162–164]: [6] leaves of ‘plates’ (facing pp. 32, 56, 73, 86, 118 and 144).
[3] The Hound of the Baskervilles, Arthur Conan Doyle, illustrated by Francis Mosley. Pp. [1–12] 13–223 [224–228]: [6] leaves of ‘plates’ (facing pp. 24, 57, 81, 134, 164 and 200).
[4] The Valley of Fear, Arthur Conan Doyle, illustrated by Francis Mosley. Pp. [1–12] 13–224 [225–228]: [6] leaves of ‘plates’ (facing pp. 42, 76, 99, 122, 138 and 216).
Very good books with ever-so-slight discolouration to spine (only seen in the best of lights) and lightest wear to covers; else fine, with pages clean, bright and tightly bound. In a very good slipcase that shows a little shelf-wear and minimal bumping to rear.
