SMITH, Kathryn (Edited by). Penny Siopis. Johannesburg: Goodman Gallery Editions, 2005. First edition, first printing, one of the rare 100 Deluxe copies casebound in tomate red Suedel Luxe with a plastic eye affixed to front cover, and signed and hand-numbered by the artist to title page; this being number 27.
Hardback; 29.7 x 25.4 cm; 171 numbered pages. A very good copy of this scarce Deluxe edition, with binding square and tight, and pages clean and uninscribed. The copyright page notes that deluxe editions, bound in suede, were issued with an original painting; however, we have not encountered any such examples, and this copy is not accompanied by one.
A compelling study of South African artist Penny Siopis (born 1953), one of the most influential voices in contemporary African art. Working across painting, collage, installation, and video, Siopis explores themes of history, memory, identity, and the personal and political landscapes of post-apartheid South Africa. Her richly layered works draw on found materials and evocative imagery to interrogate issues of trauma, sexuality, and transformation. Accompanied by essays from leading scholars and curators, this volume offers insightful perspectives on a career spanning over three decades.
