Illustrated by Frank Reynolds with 25 coloured plates behind captioned tissue guards. Signed by the illustrator.

Publisher's original full vellum, gilt titles to spine and front cover, double rule and vignette to front cover, top edge gilt, others deckled. A clean copy with covers slightly bowed, slight darkening to vellum boards and spine, a little creasing and bumping to spine foot and lower rear corner, and some small stains to back cover. Lacking ties, as usual. Moderate foxing to edges and a few spots to prelims. With bookplate of Lillo Lumb to front paste-down, alongside dedication in pen "Lillo from Auntie Janet, Xmas 1914" to top of limitation page. Else a clean, uninscribed and tightly bound copy. Miss Annie Isobel 'Lillo' Lumb lived at Rose Hill, Huddersfield. Her father was a successful textile magnate, the owner of Joseph Lumb and Sons Ltd. In adulthood she was to become a celebrated horsewoman. An oil-and-canvas portrait of her as a child painted by Irish artist William Orpen in 1906 can be found at the Huddersfield Art Gallery.

Illustrator Frank Reynolds (1876-1953) studied at Heatherley's before working for the Illustrated London News and the Sketch. He was the Punch art editor from 1920 to 1932. He illustrated several books in the first decade of the 20th century but "established his reputation in this field with watercolour illustrations for a Gift Book edition of Mr Pickwick (selections from Dickens's Pickwick Papers, 1910), followed by The Personal History of David Copperfield (1911), The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club (1912), and The Old Curiosity Shop (1913)" (ODNB).
