Metamorphoses by Ovid

Limited Edition #1444 of 2750 numbered copies published by The Folio Society in 2008.

"Metamorphoses, Ovid's epic poem of gods and mortals, is one of the most seductive and influential works ever written. In the 16th century, the Italian master Titian created a series of sublime paintings based on scenes from Metamorphoses. In this Folio Society limited edition, all of these paintings are published with the poem for the first time."

"These are simply the most beautiful pictures in the world" (Lucian Freud)

"This edition uses Arthur Golding's 1567 translation, which inspired Shakespeare and his contemporaries. With an introduction to the translation by Madeleine Forey and a new essay by Michael Prodger, this is a beautiful tribute to Titian and Ovid."

Condition

This is a book that has been perused by its previous owner, hence the binding is not as tight as it used to be on a new example. It has the lightest signs of wear to the extremities, as pictured, as well as a very small, creased corner to one of the tipped-in plates. Otherwise, the book is in lovely condition, immaculate and uninscribed. It is housed in a solander box that has some signs of shelf-wear, but is otherwise structurally sound and without any major faults.
