A wonderful opportunity to acquire the three original first-edition, first-print volumes of C.S. Lewis’s celebrated Christian apologetic works—Broadcast Talks (1942), Christian Behaviour (1943), and Beyond Personality (1944)—handsomely bound together in a beautiful leather binding, and housed in a protective clamshell case.

Originally published separately following the author's wartime BBC radio broadcasts, these three works would later be revised and combined to form Mere Christianity (1952), the book that established Lewis as one of the most influential Christian thinkers of the twentieth century. This volume preserves the earliest appearance of the texts that would become one of the most widely read works of Christian apologetics ever published.

Included within the volume are first edition, first printings of:

The three volumes have been bound together in one volume by the ever-so-talented Rosy Gray of Black Cat Bindery, a traditional craft bookbindery based in the heart of Somerset, UK. Each original work has been preserved in full within, and is separated from the others by a green dividing leaf.

Bound in full Harmatan and Oakridge fine green leather, with the author's recognisable signature in gilt to the upper cover, with five raised bands to spine with titles and repeat twin rules in gilt. Hand-sewn headbands in three colours—white, green and blue—echoing the colours of the dust jackets of the first editions. Long, silk marker ribbon in amber. Gorgeous hand-made stencil-dyed endpapers known as "Katazome-shi", surrounded by gilt rules on all turn-ins. Binder's signature to rear turn-in.

The book is presented in a hand-made clamshell box covered in matching green cloth with leather label to spine and the author's signature in gilt to front cover, with the same beautiful stencil-dyed paper edges, and lined in soft green suedel.

Condition: very good, with clean, uninscribed pages and just the occasional spot. An understated, classic binding for these increasingly scarce works—the original first appearances of what would later become Mere Christianity.

PLEASE NOTE - The final two images show two further volumes from a matching set of three rebinds we have in stock. In addition to this volume, which combines the earliest printed forms of Broadcast Talks, Christian Behaviour, and Beyond Personality, we also have matching rebinds of the first UK revised and amplified edition, published as Mere Christianity (1952), and of the first US edition (1952). Together, the three form a beautiful set for the Lewis completist.
