Lost Cities of the Ancient World. London: The Folio Society, 2005. First printing thus. Maps by Reginald Piggott. 252 × 177 × 23–29 mm. 5 vols (see below). Type: Janson with Giovanni for display. Printed and bound by Cambridge University Press. Full brown cloth with a design in black and gold (different for each volume) by Nick Hardcastle; pale brown endleaves with a map. Black five-volume slip case titled (as above) in gold. The plates reproduce photographs of ancient sites, excavations and artefacts; each volume is also illustrated with line-drawings of artefacts, and maps and plans by Piggott. The five volumes are as follows:
[1] Troy and the Trojans, Carl W. Blegen, introduction by David Easton. Pp. [i–iv] v–xxxvi, 1–164: [18] pages of colour plates. The text was originally published in 1963.
[2] Knossos, Colin F. Macdonald. Pp. [i–iv] v–xxxiii [xxxiv], 1–254: [24] pages of colour plates + [1] folded plan of ‘The Palace of Knossos’ by Theodore Fyfe (inserted in a pocket on the back paste-down). This is the first edition of this text.
[3] Babylon, Joan Oates. Pp. [i–iv] v–xxii, 1–294 [295–298]: [14] pages of colour plates. The text was originally published in 1979.
[4] Pompeii & Herculaneum, cities of Vesuvius, Michael Grant, introduction by Andrew Wallace-Hadrill. Pp. [i–iv] v–xxxiv [xxxv–xxxvi], 1–196: [34] pages of colour plates. The text was originally published in 1971.
[5] Petra and the lost kingdom of the Nabataeans, Jane Taylor. Pp. [i–iv] v–xxiv, 1–280: [26] pages of colour plates. The text was originally published in 2002.
Near-fine books with pages clean, bright and tightly bound. In a near-fine slipcase that is ever-so-slightly scuffed and shelf-worn. A lovely set.
