MALORY, Thomas (Sir). Le Morte d'Arthur. 2 vols (see below). Printed by the Bath Press. Bound by Smith Settle. Black two-volume clamshell box, leather spine-label titled (as above) in gold. This facsimile of the third Dent edition of Malory’s work (1927), designed and illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley in 1893–1894, was printed on paper specially made by James Cropper to resemble the original as closely as possible. The title-pages are dated ‘MMIII’ and ‘2003’ respectively, but copies were not issued until early 2004.

[1] The birth, life and acts of King Arthur, of his noble knights of the round table, their marvellous enquests and adventures, the achieving of the San Greal and in the end le morte Darthur . . . the text written by Sir Thomas Malory and imprinted by William Caxton at Westminster in the year MCCCCLXXXV, and now spelled in modern style, embellished with many original designs by Aubrey Beardsley [facsimile]. Edited, with a note on the text, by F.J. Simmons. 300 × 235 × 69 mm. Pp. [1–2], [i–v] vi–xxxi [xxxii], [1] 2–538 [539–544]: [23] leaves of ‘plates’, [2] leaves of plates. Type: Caslon with Old English for display (the title-page and colophon set by Folio). Full black morocco decorated in gold to a design by Beardsley (redrawn by Frances Button); pale brown hand-made endleaves (from Fabriano’s ‘Roma’ range). The colophon records that 1020 copies were printed. A printed slip with notes on the care of leather is loosely inserted. 

[2] Thomas Malory, The Morte D'Arthur and Aubrey Beardsley [ornament] an essay by Anthony S. G. Edwards. 222 × 138 × 2 mm. Pp. [1–2] 3–15 [16]. Type: Ehrhardt. Sewn into printed pale brown paper wrappers. This essay was specially commissioned by Folio and is inserted in a pocket inside the box which holds the facsimile (volume [1] above).

A near-fine copy, with binding square and firm, and pages clean and uninscribed, with a very tiny small spot of wear to the front cover's gild (see photo). In like clamshell case with slightest of shelf-wear. The book will come with its original box which we will place inside another, larger box before shipping to ensure it arrives unscathed.
