Kitagawa Utamaro, Studies from Nature. 270 × 209 × 10–18 mm. 6 vols (see below). Printed by Pureprint. Bound by Smith Settle. Five volumes of Japanese art and poetry in facsimile, bound in paper printed with designs by Neil Gower and paper title labels in English and with Japanese calligraphy by Kashuu, accompanied by a commentary volume. Clamshell box by G. Ryder and Co. in pale orange cloth lined with dark blue paper printed with repeat design in gold. Secured by two gold ribbons, with printed paper label titled (as above).

Accompanied by a certificate, wrapped in white Japanese paper, which states ‘limited to five hundred hand-numbered copies and twenty lettered copies hors de commerce’. This is number 179.

The three woodblock-printed books reproduced here were designed by Utamaro around 1788–1791 and published by Tsutaya Ju ¯zaburo ¯. The six volumes are as follows:

[4–5] [The Book of Myriad Birds]. Pp. [1–18] & [1–16]. Facsimile of British Museum item 1915,0823,0.67.1-2. Concertina style binding.

[6] Kitagawa Utamaro, Studies from Nature, translations and commentary by John T. Carpenter, essays by John T. Car penter, Alfred Haft, Alex Kerr. Pp. [1–14] 15–150 [151–152]. Type: Arno Pro. Bound in full blue paper blocked with title in gold; pale grey endleaves.

Five hand-crafted books of exquisite Japanese art and poetry in facsimile for the first time. This beautiful and, arguably  Nominated in both the Best British Book and the Limited Edition and Fine Binding categories of the British Book Production and Design Awards.
