Grimm’s Folk Tales. London: The Folio Society, 1949. First printing thus. Translated by Eleanor Quarrie, with etchings by George Cruikshank, coloured by hand. Intro duction by Eleanor Quarrie. 189 × 129 × 20 mm. Pp. [1–2] 3–206 [207–208]: [18] leaves of coloured plates. Type: Imprint with Old English for display. Printed by Mackay, the lithographs by the Chiswick Press. Bound by Mackay in full red cloth with a figure in gold on a grey panel. White dust-jacket printed in purple and pale blue.

This was the first new translation commissioned by Folio. The Cruikshank etchings were reproduced lithographically in monochrome and hand-coloured by Maud Johnson, using as models a series of watercolours thought to be by the artist. However, Charles Ede was told after publication that these were probably ‘forgeries’ by another member of the Cruikshank family, and when the book was reprinted the etchings were not coloured.

Externally very good, with lightest bumping and wear to corners, a few small spots of foxing to edges; else a clean, uninscribed and tightly bound copy. With its original, unclipped dust wrapper in good condition, with a little nibbling to extremities, slightly foxed to flaps and with a tiny amount of loss to head of spine; now in an archival wrapper.
