Folio 21, A Bibliography of the Folio Society 1947–1967. London: The Folio Society, 1968. First printing.
With an appraisal by Sir Francis Meynell, R.D.I. Folio Press. Compiled with an ‘Historical note’ (pp. 11–16) by Charles Ede, based on bibliographical work by Sandra Raphael. Photographs by John Preston-Bell. 285 × 194 × 23 mm. Pp. [1–6] 7–207 [208]. Type: Bas kerville with Fry’s Baskerville for display. Printed by Mackay, the lithographs by Cowell, the Curwen Press and Jarrold. Bound by Mackay in full grey cloth with Folio’s device in blind on the front board, black leather spine-label; dark red endleaves. Dark red and black slip case. Errata slip attached to page [5].
Tim Wilkinson comments in Folio 1968–71 that ‘Possibly it was rather conceited of [Folio] to think that anyone might be interested in [Folio's] past history, but . . . we felt that we would like to have a record, even were it to be published for ourselves alone’.
The bibliography includes descriptions of books published previous to 1867 with a total of 120 pages devoted to colour and monochrome facsimiles of text, display and illustrations from the books, and photo graphs of the bindings. The last seven leaves had to be cancelled and reprinted, apparently because of numerous errors in the text of the index. A supplement, covering the period 1968–1971, was published in 1972, and was re-issued with the sheets of the present work in the same year as Folio 25.
A good copy, with tanning to spine, light wear to extremities, foxing to edges and sporadically throughout; in a slightly worn and stained slipcase.
