Faust, by Goethe. Translated by Abraham Hayward, with 31 coloured plates behind captioned tissue guards, including an extra coloured plate of 'The Witches' Revel'. London: Hutchinson & Co., 1908. Limited Edition, one of 250 numbered copies; this being number 160. Signed by the artist to limitation page.

Publisher's original full vellum, gilt titles and decorations to spine and front cover, top edge gilt, others deckled, silk-watered endleaves. Covers slightly bowed, as usual, heavy spotting and darkening to vellum boards and spine, spine tips lightly bumped, tiny nick to bottom of rear board. Some foxing to prelims, sporadically some spotting throughout, small penned name inscription to FFEP, one tissue guard loose. Break to front between limitation page and frontispiece, as well as a few shallow ones throughout; binding is secure however.

A beautiful edition of the famous tale following the scholar Faust, who makes a pact with Mephistopheles, the Devil, trading his soul for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures. Illustrated herewith for the first time by Hungarian children's book illustrator Willy Pogany who remains best known for his pen and ink drawings of myths and fables. Heavily fairy-tale orientated and often featuring motifs of mythical animals such as nymphs and pixies, his style is a fine example of Art Nouveau. Pogany illustrated more than 150 volumes including The Golden Fleece, Gulliver's Travels, The Adventures of Odysseus, and Goethe's Faust.
