ANDERSEN, Hans Christian.  Fairy Tales.  London: Constable & Co. Ltd., 1917 (re-issue of 1913 first edition).  With 16 colour illustrations by W. Heath Robinson behind captioned tissue guards and numerous black-and-white in-text line drawings.  8vo, Contemporary full blind-stamped morocco, heavily ornate with gilt to covers and spine, all edges gilt, twin rule to turnins, new endpapers. Fine Binding.

A wonderful copy, binding square and secure, with some signs of external wear - particularly some spotting and wear to the closed text block and the leather slightly marked and rubbed - and internally clean and uninscribed, with just heavier foxing throughout, not affecting text legibility, and ex-libris bookplate of David Davies to front free endpaper.  All 16 colour plates are present, as called for, and are in lovely condition.  A beautiful fine, contemporary binding containing Andersen's fairy tales.  Loosely inserted within is a card illustrated by Edmund Dulac featuring an illustrated scene from The Sleeping Beauty.

Contents include: The Marsh King’s Daughter; Tommelise; The Snow Queen – Part the First: Which Treats of the Mirror and Its Fragments; Part the Second: A Little Boy and a Little Girl; Part the Third: The Enchanted Flower-Garden; Part the Fourth: The Prince and the Princess; Part the Fifth: The Little Robber-Maiden; Part the Sixth: The Lapland Woman and the Finland Woman; Part the Seventh: Which Treats of the Snow Queen’s Palace, and of What Came to Pass Therein; Elfin-Mount; The Little Mermaid; The Storks; The Nightingale; The Wild Swans; The Real Princess; The Red Shoes; The Emperor’s New Clothes; The Swineherd; The Flying Trunk; The Leaping Match; The Shepherdess and the Chimney-Sweeper; The Ugly Duckling; The Naughty Boy.
