BALDUS, Édouard. Recueil d’Ornements d’après les Maîtres les Plus Célèbres des XV, XVI, XVII et XVIIIe Siècles, or, Collection of Ornaments after the most famous masters of the fifteenth, sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries. Paris: Heliogravure par Edouard Baldus, 1866.
Large folio, 448 x 328 mm. French text. First edition. Ornamental heliogravure title, 99 further heliogravure plates of designs after Aldegraver, Beham, Durer, Delaune, and others (100 in total, as called for). Contemporary half-calf, top edge gilt, gilt lettering to spine, decorated endpapers with a repeated pattern. Ex-library plates (City of Leicester Polytechnic Art Library) to both front paste-down and endpaper, as well as library call number to foot of spine. Small gilt 'Chatelin' binder's stamp to inside front board. Antoine Chatelin (1820 - c.1890) was a French bookbinder responsible for many fine bindings. Forced into exile in London 1852, after being convicted for taking part in a banquet commemorating the proclamation of the 1848 Republic, Chatelin exhibited in the 1862 International Exhibition alongside Bedford and Riviere, and worked for the French aristocratic political exiles, including the dukes of Aumale and Chartres.
Heavy external wear, extremities heavily rubbed and a little frayed, boards lightly scratched, front joint a tad weakened, library call numbers stamped to foot of spine. Ex-library plates to front endpaper and paste-down, occasional spotting and browning throughout, offsetting to pages opposite plates. All 100 plates clean and present, as called for.
