DON QUIXOTE. 2 vols (see below). Red two-volume clamshell box titled (as above) in gold. A specially bound reprint of item 817, issued with a separate pamphlet.
London: The Folio Society, 2005. Limited, Numbered Edition. The two volumes are as follows:
[1] The History and Adventures of the Renowned Don Quixote, translated from the Spanish of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, to which is prefixed, some account of the author’s life, by T. Smollett MD, introduction by Robin Chapman, illustrations by Quentin Blake. Fourth printing thus. 263 × 167 × 55 mm. Pp. [1–2], [i–iv] v–xxxix [xl], 1–768 [769–774]: [16] leaves of two-colour ‘plates’. Type: Ehrhardt. Printed by Memminger MedienCentrum. Bound by Real Lachenmaier in full orange-brown morocco with a design in black, red and gold by Quentin Blake; dark red endleaves. An additional leaf bearing a colophon has been tipped in before the frontispiece. It reads in part ‘This edition has been published to mark the 400th anniversary of Cervantes’s masterpiece. It is limited to 1250 copies’. Cervantes’s work was first published in Spanish in two parts in 1605 and 1615, and was translated into many languages, including English, during the following 20 years. Smollett’s translation appeared in 1755, with a revised edition (followed here) in 1770. The ‘plates’ are printed in pink and black, and Blake has also supplied a frontispiece and eight head- and tail-pieces, printed in the same colours. The text and illustrations combine very effectively to make this among the most attractive books of the period.
[2] Reading Don Quixote, Comprising ‘The Windmills of His Mind’ – An Essay by Miranda France, and a Selection of Comments by Other Writers . . . 247 × 152 × 2 mm. Pp. [1–4] 5–15 [16]. Type: Ehrhardt with Caslon for display. Sewn into red card wrappers, cover-label.
A near-fine copy, with binding square and firm, and pages clean and uninscribed. With a commentary pamphlet that is near-fine, with just light wear to rear cover, as pictured. Housed in the equally near-fine clamshell that is ever-so-slightly shelf-worn. A wonderful edition.
[Accompanied by]
An attractive, limited-edition First Day Cover (FDC) commissioned by Royal Mail in 1993 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol', signed by Quentin Blake who designed the full set of stamps used on the Cover. The stamps introduce you to some of the story's key characters, including Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim, Mr Scrooge's nephew and wife, Mr and Mrs Fezziwig, and Scrooge himself. As this limited edition is not signed by the artist directly inside, we thought a signed FDC would be a lovely addition to it.
