London: The Crime Club by Collins, 1956. First edition, first impression. Sized 19 x 12.5cm. Pp. 256. With original, unclipped dust wrapper.
Publisher's original cloth binding with black lettering to spine. Crushing and slight darkening to spine tips, with a patch of sunning to foot of spine (coinciding with the loss on the dust wrapper). A few spots of foxing to otherwise tanned edges. Binding has a lean, but pages are tightly bound. There is a little foxing throughout, primarily contained to prelims where there is also a little offsetting. Penciled inscriptions to rear paste-down. In a good, unclipped dust wrapper with grubby, darkened and in-places stained panels. Spine is a bit tanned, and there is a little chipping to extremities, with a few closed tears and a larger portion of loss to head of spine. A previous owner's name is also written in pen to the upper-right corner of the front panel. The dust wrapper has now been placed in a removable, protective sleeve of archival quality.
A charity murder game at a Devon house turns into the real thing. Sir George and Lady Stubbs, the hosts of a village fête, hit upon the novel idea of staging a mock murder mystery. In good faith, Ariadne Oliver, the well known crime writer, agrees to organise their murder hunt. Despite weeks of meticulous planning, at the last minute Ariadne calls her friend Hercule Poirot for his expert assistance. Instinctively, she senses that something sinister is about to happen…Beware – nobody is quite what they seem!
