Best Ghost Stories, selected by Anne Ridler.

London: Faber and Faber, 1945. First edition, first impression of this rather uncommon anthology of ghost stories. Publisher's black binding, gilt lettering to spine, plain endpapers; in unclipped dust wrapper. Pp. 360.

A scarce example, produced in complete conformity with the authorised economy standards. A collection of the best ghost stories which the compiler could find, roughly within the limits of the past hundred years, and omitting a few stories which have been too often reprinted. It ranges therefore from Wilkie Collins to John Collier, from Kipling to Elizabeth Bowen. While there are plenty of straightforward ghosts in this book, the title has been a little stretched to include other manifestations of the supernatural, dreadful or curious; and one or two stories provide light relief, in burlesque or surprise.

Externally in good condition with some bumping to corners and discolouration and crushing to spine tips. Neat inscription in pen on the FFEP. In a good, unclipped dust wrapper with slightly dulled panels, some visible nibbling to extremities and some small present (particularly to spine tips). The dust wrapper has now been placed in an archival sleeve.
