CARROLL, Lewis
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
London: William Heinemann, [1907]
Illustrated by RACKHAM, Arthur
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. London: William Heinemann, 1907. First trade edition (thus), first impression. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham with 13 colour plates with captioned tissue guards, and 14 black-and-white line drawings.
For the first time, Rackham's plates were distributed at the appropriate places throughout the text, rather than gathered together at the end as they had been in Rip Van Winkle (1905) and Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens (1906).
Original olive-green cloth with dark blue titles and gilt-stamped illustration to upper board, and titles in dark-blue to the spine. Profusely illustrated with 13 tipped-in colour plates, each with a captioned tissue guard, and 15 black-and-white line drawings by Arthur Rackham. Sized 21 x 16cm. Pp. xi, 162. Complete example with all plates present. One of the most beautiful illustrated editions of Lewis Carroll's classic.
This is a wonderful copy that was sold in the famous Lindmark's Book Shop in Poughkeepsie, the shop behind one of the known book burnings of the 20th century. We investigated slightly and wrote an interesting blog related to the book's possible provenance, and invite you to give it a read. It's a fascinating 'what it' story: Through the Flames and Down the Rabbit Hole: A (Possible) Tale of Survival from Lindmark's Book Shop
Condition
The binding square and firm with some wear at the edges, fading at the spine and extremities and a few marks to the cloth. The gilt remains bright. The contents, with a previous owners' name, an ink spot and a bookseller's blind stamp to the front free endpaper and very light spotting to the endpapers. Otherwise clean and complete. A very nice example indeed. The book has now been placed in a removable, protective sleeve of archival quality.
