FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED by the author to "The Right Honourable Lord Frederick Campbell, with great respect from the Author".
Bound in half leather over marbled paper boards - looks to have been sympathetically restored rather than newly rebound - with gilt titles to spine. Externally in good, but worn condition. There is heavy rubbing and wear to outer edges and corners, with some small, unsightly dings into the boards. The leather is a little worn and discoloured to spine and label. Edges are tanned, as are the pages. Joints and hinges are very strong, with text block firm and square and pages tightly bound. Heavy foxing to prelims, mild-to-moderate foxing throughout. A few shallow creases and a few ear marks throughout, and page 174 with a small portion that was fixed (not affecting text). Previous owner's inscriptions to front paste-down and FFEP, and author's personal hand-written dedication to page before title page to Lord Frederick Campbell MP. Else exceptionally clean inside, with text clear and bright and lightest sporadic offsetting. Collated as complete, with all folding plates present, as called for.
William Forsyth served as superintendent of the royal gardens at St James' and Kensington Palaces under King George III from 1784 until his death, and was a founding member of the Royal Horticultural Society. His eminence led to his treatise on fruit-trees becoming a classic horticultural work, running through seven editions in 22 years. The first edition of this work is scarce indeed, but finding a copy that bears the author's hand-written dedication is EXCEPTIONALLY RARE.
