SLIGHT, Julian. A Narrative of the Loss of the Royal George, at Spithead, August, 1782; Including Tracey's Attempt to Raise Her in 1783, also, Gen. Pasley's Operations in Removing the Ship, by Gunpowder, in 1839-40-41-42.
Portsea: Printed & Published by S. Horsey, [Undated] (but 1843 according to Jisc Library). Sixth edition of this important work that tells the story of the H.M.S Royal George ship's wreck and salvage attempts; a first rate gun ship in the Royal Navy. Illustrated with a folding plate to the frontispiece, and four further plates throughout, with page 83 incorrectly numbered as 12. Collated as complete.
11.1 x 7.2 cm; 156 pp. Publisher's original binding with leather spine and boards made of the wood salvaged from the wreck of the ill-fated Royal George, with publisher's note affixed to verso of FFEP guaranteeing that the timber is a genuine relic of the ship. All edges gilt, blue endpapers.
A good copy, slightly better than many other examples seen of this title, with binding with a lean but relatively firm, extremities and spine rubbed and worn, front board split down the middle, front hinge cracked. Ink inscription to verso of FFEP, large tidemark to folding frontispiece, pages browned and occasionally spotted.
The ink inscription is that of Mary Ann Carter; this is possibly the little-known 19th-century English poet, seemingly the author of a single published volume of primarily devotional verse issued in 1838. Beyond this work, virtually nothing is recorded of her life. Contemporary reception of her work was mixed; while critics acknowledged moments of sensitivity and warmth, they were often dismissive of her poetic execution, yet her work remains a curious example of early Victorian amateur poetry and its reception.
The HMS Royal George, built in 1756—over 200 years after the Mary Rose—nonetheless shares a remarkably similar history. Like the Mary Rose, she served as a flagship, taking part in the Battle of Quiberon Bay and the Battle of Cape St Vincent during the Seven Years’ War. Then, 237 years after the Mary Rose, the Royal George also sank at Spithead. At the time, she was in harbour undergoing maintenance and was consequently crowded not only with crew, but also with workmen and visiting family members. The disaster occurred when the ship was deliberately heeled to enable work on the hull, allowing water to enter through the lower deck gunports. As the wreck lay in a shallow harbour, it posed a significant hazard, prompting early salvage attempts. In 1782, Charles Spalding achieved some success using a diving bell to recover several of the ship’s guns. Thereafter, efforts were abandoned until 1834, following the development of the Deane brothers’ diving apparatus. It was during these later operations, while recovering guns from the Royal George, that the brothers were directed by fishermen to the nearby wreck of the Mary Rose, lying just a mile away. This book tells the story of the ship's wreck and salvage attempts, illustrated with several small engravings, and is bound in wood salvaged from the wreck of the Royal George.
